Pro - The best part of staying at Ryokan Nakadaya is by far the host, Tatsuo-san. He is so pleasant, always smiling and a fountain of information even beyond the basics you can get from Google. He sees you off every morning and if you have a lot of bags he might even help you tote them to the nearest train station. I cannot recommend staying here enough. Also the Ryokan is 80 years old so it's a very authentic experience, there would likely be Japanese people staying at the premises with you too. Con -The age of the Ryokan is both a plus and a minus. It's a minus because if you travel during winter like I did the hallways are can be very cold, especially at night. The floor boards creak and it can be hard to be quiet late at night if you need to go to the bathroom.

This place is super cool, the owner is chill and fluent in English so you can be chill also. A room is tiny but cozy, everything old but clean. Close to supermarket, subway, and famous shrine. A neighborhood is quiet and clams with no annoying downtown noise at night. Recommend if you are on a budget, or travel alone.

We had a wonderful two nights at Ryokan Nakadaya – the hospitality here is truly memorable and has been a highlight of our time here in Tokyo so far. In such a contemporary, cosmopolitan city it was so refreshing to stay in traditional accomodation with such a kind family. We highly recommend this Ryokan, not only will it enrich your Japanese experience, but it is also well worth supporting these beautiful people.
